Those few days in July gave Swingler the opportunity to begin the first sketches towards a series of quite extraordinary poems about the war. The first, ‘The Exiles,’ is a picture of soldiers at rest, between campaigns, somewhere between Thermopylae and Salerno Bay:

Those Spartans on the stony hill

Combed their long hair and oiled their splendid limbs,

Preparing to be beautiful in battle

Like a trained team before a football match.

Here, lounged along the sand, or shoaled

At the sea’s fringe, whose acid blue

Burnished their bodies with metallic health,

Might old Herodotus think he saw them again.
